Lie detectors or the polygraph machine is used to aid the process of finding out if someone is truthfully answering to a specific set of questions or not. The machine measures the stress levels of the person undergoing the test, and the results are indicated on a graph. The response of the actual questions is later compared with the baseline questions to detect whether the subject is lying or not. There are three types of questions usually asked. First are the irrelevant questions like asking their name address etc. The second set is the portable lie control questions of whose answers are not truthful.
These are used to detect if the subject is guilty or not. The third set is the relevant questions which are direct about the guilt. If the responses to the control questions are greater than or equal to the appropriate questions, then the answers to the relevant are considered to be truthful.
